There was a lot of interest in the medical, engineering, accounting and psychology programmes at the Education in Ireland booths.

Most of the questions parents and students had were about the fees, cost of living and eligibility, said Education in Ireland regional manager (Asia) Elizabeth McHenry.

“Ireland is very strong in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

“We’ve got renowned companies based in Ireland so there are good employment opportunities, especially for those who have completed their postgraduate studies.

“This is because postgraduates are entitled to a two-year visa and with Ireland almost at full employment, it’s easy to get hired,” she said, adding that generous scholarships were also available from the Irish government and corporations.

Little green leprechaun dolls were snapped up at the booth by visitors who were at the fair to learn more about studying in Ireland.

Meanwhile, Selset Education Centre marketing executive and senior consultant Philip Chow said New Zealand was ranked second among the top 10 safest countries in the world.

During his talk on “Experience New Zealand Education and Opportunities”, he said the cost of living was low.

“Students can work 20 hours per week and to be honest, it is enough to cover your cost of living,” he said during his talk, which drew a large crowd.

He said New Zealand’s education institutions also had a strong reputation overseas and potential students did not have to worry about the recognition of their degrees.
